What is a 503B?

An outsourcing pharmaceutical facility that compounds sterile medications.

An outsourcing facility is defined as “a facility at one geographic location or address that

  • is engaged in the compounding of sterile drugs

  • has elected to register as an outsourcing facility

  • complies with all of the requirements of the section 503B”

In 2013, the Drug Quality and Security Act (DQSA) added Section 503B of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C). 503B outsourcing facilities are subject to current good manufacturing practices (cGMP).
